Fifteen people die due to heavy rainfall in Orissa

Heavy rains lashed many parts of coastal Orissa with the state capital being pounded by 13 cm of torrential rains.

At least 15 persons have been killed and over 20 others injured after being struck by lightning at different places in Orissa, official reports said on Sunday.

Two persons died and three others suffered burn injuries when they were struck by lightning on the Mahanadi riverbank in Cuttack city on Saturday night.

They had taken shelter in a thatched shed, located under Cantonment police limits, when the mishap occurred. While one of the victims was identified as Nimai Mandal, the other person's identity was not known, the reports said.

The injured persons had been admitted to local hospitals for treatment.

One Akhila Chandra Pati of Tangi and another Banamali Dehury of Bhagatpur also died after being struck by Lightning.

Reports of other deaths had been received from Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Dhenkanal and Balasore districts.

As many as four deaths have been reported from Jagatsinghpur district.

While one Paramananda Behera of Jillanasi was struck by lightning, Ghanashyam Mallick of Nuapada village and Narmada Palei (22) of Tirtol block and a postal employee, Kalpataru prusty (51) of Sanar Patna village were killed in the district after lightning strikes.
