A case was lodged on this against UP Sports Minister Ayodhya Pal and six other persons of his family, including his son Om Pal alias Raju, in Chitrakoot district.

Chitrakoot district is in south-central Uttar Pradesh.

The FIR was lodged on the orders of the Fatehpur (part of the Allahabad division) district court. An FIR means a case has been registered and the police are legally bound to investigate it.

Prabal Pratap Pal, a Chitrakoot-based doctor, approached the court saying that his daughter Preeti, a nurse at the Banda district hospital, was engaged to the minister's son on December 7, 2008. After the engagement, the minister's family allegedly started demanding Rs 50 lakh as dowry.

When Prabal Pratap Pal expressed his inability to pay so much, the minister's family called off the wedding.

The minister's wife and two daughters are on the FIR. So are Ayodhya Pal’s younger brother and his wife.

Prabal Pratap Pal alleged that he spent around Rs 5 lakh (Rs 5 million) on the engagement.
