Five killed, 14 rescued in Chinese mine mishaps

Five miners were killed and 14 others rescued in two separate coal mine accidents in China.

Five miners trapped in a coal mine in east China's Jiangxi Province were killed by leaking gases while two other miners had been rescued, local officials said.
The accident took place on Thursday at the Jianxin Coal Mine in Shangtang Township, Fengcheng City, when the coal shaft in which they were working filled with gas within seconds, the state media reported today.
Meanwhile, 12 trapped miners in a collapsed coal mine in southwest China's Guizhou Province were rescued today.
The miners were lifted to safety by noon on Friday, a spokesman with the provincial coal mine safety administration said.
The accident took place on Wednesday at the Rongyang Coal Mine located at the Xiashan Township, Xingren County, the Bouyei-Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Qianxinan in Guizhou.
12 miners were in the process of changing shifts when the collapse occurred.
China is the world's largest coal producer and consumer. However, the country's coal mines are notorious for its high accident rates.
