The accident occurred near Nakardei on Sugauli-Raxaul section of the east central railway at 7:30 am when the jeep was crossing the railway track, police said.

The driver of the engine escaped from the spot.

Soon after the incident, angry locals blocked the railway track demanding adequate compensation to the bereaved families.

They later turned violent, torched the engine and uprooted the tracks disrupting the movement of trains in the section for several hours.

Several senior officials were camping on the spot, sources said.

The injured were admitted to a nearby government hospital where their condition was stated to be critical.
