Former Puducherry CM Shanmugam hospitalised

Veteran Congress leader and former Puducherry Chief Minister P Shanmugam (81) has been hospitalised in Karaikal for treatment of a head injury he suffered in a fall in the bathroom of his house.

Veteran Congress leader and former Puducherry Chief Minister P Shanmugam (81) has been hospitalised in Karaikal for treatment of a head injury he suffered in a fall in the bathroom of his house at nearby Nedunkadu.

The condition of Shanmugam, admitted to the private hospital on Wednesday night, was stated to be stable, officials said on Thursday.

Puducherry health department had deputed a special medical team from the union territory capital to provide treatment to the former Chief Minister.

Shanmugam served as Chief Minister of Puducherry in 2000-01. He had also held the post of Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee President. He represented Puducherry in the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms from 1980.

Leader of the Opposition in Puducherry Assembly A M H Nazeem (DMK), former Minister Chandrakasu and Congress leders visited Shanmugam at the hospital.
