In February this year, Pinto and Priyanka Chopra had launched a new campaign ‘Girl Rising India’ aimed at changing the lives of girls across the country.

“The Prime Minister said the ‘Girl Rising’ campaign in India should focus especially on the problem of female foeticide,” said a PMO release.

Pinto, known for her role in Academy award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, and others told the PM how the Girl Rising campaign is aimed at educating and empowering girls. Girl Rising uses films and documentaries to promote the rights of girls.

Launched from Haryana’s Panipat earlier this year, the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign aims at creating awareness against female foeticide, and the atrocities and discrimination women face on a day-to-day basis.
