Indian men barely do any housework, spending just 19 minutes a day on an average, heaping routine chores on Indian women who slog longer hours at home at an average of 298 minutes per day.
A survey done by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (see graphic) in 29 countries measures the average minutes spent per day by men and women in different activities.
There is a yawning gap between men and women in India when it comes to time spent on doing unpaid work (women: 352 minutes; men: 52 minutes). This includes routine housework, care of family members and travel related to household activities. Even in Slovenia where men clock in the most minutes for routine housework at 114 minutes, women do nearly the double at 212 minutes.
Indian men have an abysmal record of 8 minutes when it comes to the care of household members which they also leave to women who spend a far higher 33 minutes. As for time spent on personal care, including eating and sleeping, the gap between the sexes is much smaller especially in European countries.
French women spend the most time on personal care (755 minutes) with French men not far behind (738 minutes).
The sportiest women are in Finland (30 minutes) and Slovenia (28 minutes) whereas Indian women spend an average of only one minute on sports. Almost everywhere in the world, men are being able to take more time off for leisure.
Indian men get 119 minutes and Indian women a lower 98. The Norwegians are leisure champs with a small gap between time spent by women (376 minutes) and men (379 minutes). Norwegian men pitch in the most with housework and related chores while Japanese men do the least, the survey said.
It said that Turkish women spend the most time of any country in the survey doing unpaid chores such as housework or shopping, clocking up 377 minutes a day, while their male partners spend 116 minutes a day on such tasks.
