His assets, worth Rs 365.86 crore, will surpass the Rs 173 crore declared by Reddy’s fellow politician from Andhra Pradesh Nageswara Rao, a Telugu Desam Party MP, in 2009.

Jagan Mohan’s assets are in the form of shares in various listed and unlisted companies. He had assets of less than Rs 10 lakh in 2004, the year his father, YS Rajasekhar Reddy (YSR), became chief minister.

Jagan Mohan, who is president of the YSR Congress, declared assets in his affidavit filed on Friday before the returning officer.

He is trying to retain the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat (about 400 km south of Hyderabad), which he had vacated after resigning from the Congress in November last year following a prolonged quarrel with the party leadership. He became MP in 2009 and wanted to succeed his father as chief minister when YSR died in September that year.

Jagan Mohan’s wife, Bharati, declared assets of Rs 41.33 crore.

His mother, Vijayalaxmi, who gave up her MLA’s office when Jagan Mohan resigned, is contesting from the Pulivendula assembly seat, which too goes to polls on May 8. She will file her nominations on Saturday.

The ruling Congress has fielded state health minister DL Ravindra Reddy while the main opposition TDP has named Rajya Sabha member MV Mysoora Reddy as its candidate against Jagan Mohan.
