A technical issue held up Riccardo Moretti from getting a second pole position in a row after he topped the timesheets in the opening round in Mugello. Moretti set a best time of 2’02”948 for the race to be held at Imola's Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. The Italian rider won the opening round of the championship and will be looking to make it two wins in a row. Moretti was the fastest rider in the first qualifying practice.

Mahindra’s other rider Sarath Kumar suffered a crash in both Saturday's free practice and qualifying sessions, from which he escaped uninjured. Even so, Sarath will start Sunday's race from the 7th row - 20th spot - thanks to his best lap-time of 2'10''797.
