THE ARMY Garrison Ground in Mhow will be named after hockey legend and Olympian, late Shankar Laxman. Infantry School Commandant Lt Gen Satyavir Yadav announced this after he presented a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the widow of the hockey player, Shanti Devi at her house yesterday. The Chief of the Army Staff had approved this as a token of true recognition of Laxman’s dedicated service in promoting sporting activities in the Army.

Shankar Laxman was Captain in the Indian Army in the 5th Battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry (MLI) and it is a mere coincidence that the Army Chief Gen JJ Singh is also from MLI and the 26th Battalion of the MLI is posted at Mhow for the past few months.

26 MLI Commanding Officer Col Vijay Sawant and other officers of the unit were also present on this occasion. The jawans of the 26 MLI unit celebrated as one of the members of their regiment had been honored by the Army Chief posthumously for his contribution to the sports and bringing pride to the nation. Lt Gen Yadav spoke to Shanti Devi who could not hide her
tears for the honor given to her husband. Lt Gen Yadav assured that the Army would always be with her.

Later talking to reporters, Lt Gen Yadav said that the historical Garrison Ground of Mhow will be named after late Shankar Laxman.

A formal declaration in this regard will be made after the renovation work of the ground is over. He said that due to increase in insurgency operations and a bigger role for the Army in counter insurgency operations there has been a fall in the achievements of the Army in field of sports but the Infantry School and the Indian Army will bring back the glory of hockey to Mhow.

He said this will be the right tribute to the soul of that great man.
