Ghantewala has become a metaphor for an institution that has seen the rise and fall of empires. Famous for its timeless sweets and desi ghee savouries since 1790, it's still spoken of with reverence for its aromatic Pista Lauj, Badam Lauj and Sohan Halwa. Old-timers, though, say that Ghantewala has seen better times, especially in those days when the owners hadn't split and created two shops out of one. Because of this new situation, there's no seating space. Still, at least one of the owners is clutching at the straws of tradition and cashing in on the legacy.
