The police are questioning all relatives, including the girl’s parents. Though they do not know who ‘throttled’ the girl or where the crime was committed, senior superintendent of police Raghubir Lal confirmed the post mortem findings.

A Class 1 student, the girl was allegedly raped by Om Pal Giri on Sunday evening. When they got to know of the crime, elders from both sides, including girl’s mother, met and decided to hush up the matter.

Giri, who was arrested on Monday, was slapped a few times and let off.

His family, said the police, gave the girl’s parents R1.5 lakh as “compensation”.

The girl was sent to the school on Monday where she complained of abdominal pain and died before she could be taken to hospital.

“The doctors have now confirmed that her death was caused by throttling,” investigating officer Sudhir Tyagi said.

Giri was arrested for the murder of Kunwar Pal, a distant relative, in what looked like a case of honour killing. “Pal, murdered in September, is understood to have had an affair with Giri’ sister,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
