"On the auspicious and joyous occasion of the New Year, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to the people of Goa," Sidhu said in his statement.

"Today, we are stepping into yet another year in our life. This is an important occasion to reflect on the year gone by and prepare ourselves, physically and mentally, to embrace the future," the governor said.

Chief minister Digambar Kamat, in his message, said that during the year gone by, the government succeeded in winning confidence of people through it's commitment for the welfare of common man in the state.

"Let us reflect on these achievements and rededicate ourselves to take the state and it's people to new heights of progress and prosperity to make Goa a model state in the country," he said.

Kamat said that there is no place for violence in democracy and therefore all issues should be resolved in peaceful manner. Since our state is an international tourist centre, we should welcome our guests and should see that no inconvenience is caused to them.

"Let the new year bring in peace and prosperity to all," he added, an official release said.
