Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday demanded a review of the three-month sentence a military court handed to a soldier for molesting a teenager in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district in July last year.
Terming the ‘lenient verdict’ a display of ‘insensitivity’ on the part of the army, Gogoi said he would move the Ministry of Defence for a review of the case so that the victim gets proper justice.
An army court had on Monday ordered demotion of Anil Kumar Upadhyaya from a Naik of the 287 Field Regiment to Sepoy besides sentencing him to three months of rigorous imprisonment in military custody for molesting an 18-year-old girl at Panidihing Dolopa village in Sivasagar district.
The incident evoked widespread protests with 27 organisations demanding stern action against the accused soldier.
“The army court has been insensitive to the seriousness of the crime and has taken a lenient view. Imprisonment for only three months is far less than the heinous crime committed by the soldier,” Gogoi said in a statement.
