They had robbed the employees of a Delhi-based jewellery firm of 5.6kg gold jewellery and Rs 2.18 lakh in cash at Murad Nagar area of NH-58 on the night of August 12.

Jeweller Vikas Verma, who runs jewellery showroom at Shastri Nagar area of Ghaziabad, was arrested along with two of his accomplices Vikram Nagar and Kailash Jatav. Three others are still absconding.

Initial police investigation estimated the robbery to be worth Rs 1.2 crore. During the investigation, Verma revealed that he frequented jewellery market at Meerut and ran a gang of criminals to rob traders who came to Meerut with their valuables.

"On the day of robbery, we targeted these employees in Meerut and followed them in a car while they were on their way back to Delhi after sales. In mid-way at Ghaziabad, we robbed them on gun-point and fled to Vijay Nagar, where we distributed the gold and cash," Verma said.

Police said that there are eight criminal cases against the two arrested robbers in Ghaziabad. So far, police could recover only 2kg of robbed gold jewellery from their possession.

"The rest of the robbed gold and cash would also be recovered once we nab the three other culprits," said Raghubir Lal, senior superintendent of police (SSP).

The three employees of Hari Prasad Gopi Krishna Jewellers at Karol Bagh also identified the robbers after the arrest.
