STRINGS OF the musical instrument form the perfect harmony with the wooden mallets. And this harmony is created by Pt Shivkumar Sharma, who then takes the audience under the spell of his skill.

Padmavisbhushan Pt Shivkumar Sharma, whose name has become synonymous with santoor, was in town to perform in SPIC MACAY's 'Virasat' which was held here on Saturday.

The maestro once again charmed the listeners with his soulful renditions. He is credited for elevating the position of santoor at international level.
But, one comes up with very few names with regard to identifying the santoor players in the country. "Actually, good things in life are not found in abundance," said Pt Shivkumar Sharma agreeing to the fact.

"This musical instrument is not very old and it came into limelight approximately 55 years ago. So we could just expect that the liking towards this instrument will catch up gradually," he added.

He admits that santoor is a difficult instrument to learn. "We lack the gurus, who can teach students and, thus, the population of santoor players is scarce. However, I can say that many youngsters are learning under my guidance and I hope that they can carry forward the legacy," said the maestro.

Pt Shivkumar Sharma's face glows with pride on the mention of his son's name Rahul, who is also a santoor player. "Rahul's talent is like god's blessings and I have just guided him to imbibe the deep knowledge of this instrument.
His dedication has satisfied me and through his skill, he has further widened the scope of santoor," added Sharma.
