The militants who came in an auto rickshaw stopped the section officer of state fisheries department Ved Prakash on Monday at Lamphel area on the outskirts of the city and took him away.

They said that the Lamphel police questioned all autorickshaw drivers after the kidnap. Militants also hurled a powerful grenade which did not explode at the residence of Imphal West district block development officer K Rajen in the same area on Monday evening, the sources said.

Failure to pay extortion was suspected to be the reason behind the kidnap and attack.
