Accusing the Madhya Pradesh government of taking an "inappropriate" stand on the death of professor HS Sabharwal following violence during the student union polls in Ujjain, the CPI-M on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the incident.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should have refrained from describing the professor's death as an accident before a probe into the incident was concluded, CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat told reporters in Bhopal.

"The government has taken an inappropriate stand on the entire episode," Karat said, adding a CBI probe should be conducted into the death.

Sabharwal died after being mobbed by unruly students when elections were cancelled at Madhav College on August 26 following charges of irregularities.
