Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a car carrying an intelligence agent in a restive tribal area of northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing the agent and wounding his driver before fleeing, police said.

The attack occurred in Darra Adam Khel, a town about 25 kilometres south of Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province, police official Mohammed Khan said.

Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its war on terror, and Pakistani intelligence agents have arrested scores of terrorist suspects.

Militants linked to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are believed to operate in the tribal belt along the Afghan border.
