Sources said the step was taken after a select group of contractual workers at the Gurgaon plant reportedly got in touch with the absconding Maruti Suzuki Workers Union members and offered to lend support.

Sources added that sensing potential trouble, the labour contractors were asked to hold counselling sessions with the workers. MSIL has two plants — one on Delhi Road in Gurgaon and another at Manesar with a total workforce of 9,200.

Sources said the police were informed about this supposed communication between the workers and the union members by the management.

But Gurgaon police commissioner KK Sindhu refuted the claims of potential commotion at the company's Gurgaon plant.

He said, "The decision to send 550 policemen to the Gurgaon plant was part of preventive measures to avert any untoward incident. There was no specific reason behind it."

Gurgaon police have, meanwhile, called in 1,000 additional personnel from various districts, in addition to its total strength of about 3,500.
