Mumbai-based make-up artist Clint Fernandes, one of the artists at this year's fashion week, says functionality will be the focus for make-up. "Indian designers are taking the western approach where functionality is the key," he says. So, don't expect outlandish makeup. "The preferred look will be one which women can take back home and not something that can only be worn on the runway."
Cory Wallia, another make-up pro from Mumbai, who is part of this year's fashion week, says fashion has evolved to the point where one needs to create one's own look. "There is no particular look that is trendy,'' he says. "Even at off-show events like the post-show party during the LIFW you can spot someone flaunting the 60s look, someone else going the Marilyn Monroe way, while someone else goes the bohemian way. All are equally acceptable too. At LIFW, sab kuch chalta hai!" Delhi-based hair and make-up expert, Ambika Pillai says every designer follows a specific look for his show so she will be experimenting with a variety of make-up along with interesting accessories and props in order to add drama. "The make-up and hair add to the look. If the hair and make-up are not in sync with the garments, the show may fall flat and so every designer is particular about the look of the make-up," says Pillai. "We could go by the conventional, light-eyes and dark lips look or go with the reverse too. Both the metallic and matt look will be seen."
According to Fernandes, metallic eye colours are the rage these days. "Everyone is experimenting with metallic shades and it will also be visible at fashion week."
As for the hair, expect loads of big hair volume. "I am not leaving anyone with straight hair this year. Unlike the last few years when straight hair was a rage, this year everyone wants theirs done up with curls and waves," says Pillai. Concurs Wallia, "We won't be colouring anyone's hair for week. If at all we decide to do that, hair colour sprays are the convenient option to do the job quickly."
