Haryana Police have arrested a man for the suspected honour killing of his teenage daughter at Umra village in Hisar district.

Police said Rameshwar Singh allegedly strangulated his daughter, Ritu (18), on Saturday and cremated her on Sunday. He suspected her of having relations with a person in the village.

When Singh (52) was taking Ritu’s body for cremation, he told fellow villagers she had been sick. However, police arrested Singh on the complaint of his neighbour, who overheard Ritu being beaten up on Saturday night.

Deputy superintendent of police Amrik Singh said the accused had confessed to killing his daughter and would be produced in court on Wednesday.

In May, the Supreme Court had noted Haryana was among the states where honour killings had become commonplace. The SC had termed honour killings barbaric, feudal and a slur on the country.
