Hearing a case on December 27 last, a special court at Kozhikode had convicted the 63 accused after holding them guilty on various charges, while acquitting 76 others for want of evidence.

The court had sentenced them to life imprisonment on January 14.

Challenging their conviction, the accused approached the High Court.

A Division bench, comprising Justices A K Basheer and P Bhavadasan admitted the appeal and issued notice to the state.

Eight persons, belonging to Marad fishing hamlet near Beypore in Kozhikode district, were attacked and killed by assailants, allegedly belonging to another community on May 3, 2003.

The next day one more person, belonging to a different community, was found killed on the beach.
