Taking music therapy beyond the mood enhancer level, Pt Shashank Katti from Mumbai has developed Sur-Sanjeevan—an alchemy of music, where he has mixed modern medical inventions, traditions and applications of Indian classical music, mood elevation theory and fundamental principles of Ayurveda. Taking note of this newly emerging field of music therapy, Bhatkhande Music Institute has organised a two-week-long sessions from January 15 to 29, which Pt Katti will conduct.

Pt Katti says: “My attention was first drawn towards the relaxation factor. It is understood that music is relaxing but it should be realised that any music couldn’t be relaxing for everybody. It is totally subjective as to which music relaxes whom.” He adds, “Music liked by a person can be relaxing but not always curing as only particular music which affects the body in a particular way can help the body cure. It is like taking a medicinal dose even if you don’t like it.”

Telling about the working of Sur Sanjeevan, Katti says, “The disease (disorder) is first diagnosed and its imbalance is categorised according to ‘kaph, pita and vata doshas and subdoshas.’ Matching the time of these, a particular raga is selected and applied as music therapy. The treatment goes on for about 30 days for the duration of about 20-25 minutes at that particular time. The patient is asked to listen to the music in a relaxed mood sitting comfortably or lying down.

Results are observed after 4-5 weeks.”

Disorders like joint muscular pain, insomnia, depression and sciatica get early results. But chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma and hypertension take more than 4-5 weeks’ time.
