THE HUMID spell, scorching heat and tall claims of civic authorities were all washed away when a heavy downpour that lashed the city today.
For Kanpurites, the two-and-half-hours of rain was long and eagerly awaited. It brought down the temperature remarkably and showered the city with a pleasant atmosphere.
On the other hand, tall claims of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) to keep the city free from waterlogging were exposed. Several parts of Kanpur were submerged in knee-deep water and waterlogging was reported from every corner of the city. Choked drains and sewer lines created havoc as rainwater entered houses in several areas.
In northern areas of the city, VIP Road, P Road, Sisamau, Shastri Nagar, Chain Factory crossing, Mariampur Hospital and ITI crossing were all waterlogged.
Several parts of the city’s south were marooned. The areas worst affected were Saket Nagar, Govind Nagar, Chawla Market, Kidwai Nagar, Fazalganj and Naubasta.
The Juhi rail overbridge area was badly waterlogged. Rainwater under the overbridge blocked the normal movement of traffic for hours. The entire stretch of the road from Afimkothi to Baradevi remained waterlogged.
The entire area from the Sachan Guest House to the Shastri Chowk was also affected by waterlogging for almost two hours. The road in front of the Swadeshi Cotton Mill was under water for a long period. The situation here was worse as the entire stretch of the road was dug up to lay sewer lines but it was never repaired. The dug up road was temporarily repaired. The stretch was filled with mud and those taking the road had to ply through hell. The bad road condition led to several accidents in the area today. The worst victims were those riding on two-wheelers.
A senior official of the KMC put the blame for the mishaps on the mindless digging of roads.
“Roads are dug up but no one bothers to repair them after work is over. Such carelessness proves fatal for commuters during rains,” he added.
For the KMC the scenario is nothing new. Every monsoon the same thing is repeated much like the KMC indifference.
