Heroin worth Rs 1 crore seized

COPS OF the Cantonment Police Station arrested four persons and recovered one kilogram of heroin worth Rs 1 crore in the international market. The arrest was made near Pakki Bazaar area here last evening.

Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap near Pakki Bazaar area and made the arrest. Each was carrying 250 grams of heroine. The arrested persons were Adil Jamal, resident of Teliana area, Pappu, Altaf Babu and Jamal Akhtar, all residents of Bazardeeha area in Varanasi.

The accused confessed a person smuggling the contraband from Bihar had handed over the narcotic to them at Mughalsarai railway station. The police were trying to trace other gang members.

The four were produced before the magistrate and sent to jail, said Circle Officer, Cant, Santok Singh.

This is the second time heroin has been recovered in Varanasi in a period of four days.

In the earlier instance, a criminal, associated with a leading party, Meraj Ahmad was arrested with 450 grams of heroin from his Ashok Vihar colony area here on Thursday last. The recovered narcotic was estimated to be Rs 45 lakh in the international market.

The arrested criminal had been sent in 14-day judicial custody by Special Judge (NDPS Act), BN Gupta. Ahmad was been booked under NDPS Act 8/21.
