Clinton handily defeated her Republican opponent, former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, to remain a senator from the state of New York.

The former first lady was first elected to the Senate in 2000, months before husband Bill Clinton left the White House.

Clinton is widely regarded as a top Democratic candidate for the presidency in 2008, but has not announced her intention to run for the office.

CBS and MSNBC projected Clinton has won based on early results.
