In an earlier interview, Rahman said that after reading in the press for two years that Himesh wanted to sing for him, he finally composed a song that would suit the latter’s voice. In response, Himesh says that he never expressed a desire to sing for Rahman. He tells HT City why.

“I love Rahman sahab. He’s the best. But I couldn’t do the song because I don’t sing for other actors as a policy. Plus, I have five big films on the floors as actor, singer and music director. I wish one day he would do a film where I’m the actor as well as the singer,” he explains.

Rahman thinks this is iffy. “I didn’t know he would sing for me only if I compose for a film starring him,” he said in the same interview. “I don’t know if I can do that. I don’t know Reshammiya at all.” Rahman’s representative, Vijay Mohan Iyer, says from Mumbai, “This song was a gesture on Rahman’s part. He does not need Himesh Reshammiya.”

The singer says of his policy, “It’s not fair to my producers. It’s their right to enjoy the USP of my music and voice.”
