"Such (honour) killings only brought disgrace and disrepute to the country...In some places parents removed their children from schools if the mid-day meal is cooked by dalits...What use will the country's nine per cent economic growth or the foreign exchange reserve of 300 bn USD if social atrocities like untouchability continued in the country," he said at the birth centenary celebrations of Congress leader P Kakkan in Madurai.

"India will get real independence only if social evils are eradicated from the heart," he said.
