“While one person succumbed to spurious liquor last night, 11 others died today (Tuesday). Six are in hospital,” Sachin Baadshah, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), told HT. The victims were mostly labourers and residents of the Katadia Vaas area of Majoorgam.

The police were investigating the matter and exact details would be known after post-mortem examination, the DCP said.

The deaths led to clashes in the area. People came out to the streets and protested against the deaths, demanding a crackdown on illicit liquor trade in the area.

The police had to resort to lathi charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

“The situation arose when the families of the deceased came face to face with the seller. The situation is now under control,” Usha Rada, ACP (Crime) said.

The Congress took up the matter in assembly even as the police conducted several raids in the area and confiscated 40 litres of homemade liquor.
