Opinion polls may have given Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit a high popularity rating in her Gole Market constituency, but her BJP opponent Poonam Azad is unfazed.

“I’m happy at being chosen. I applied for the ticket and left the decision to the party,” she says. “I don’t know about opinion polls, but the people of Gole Market want Dikshit to be defeated.”

When asked about her contribution to Gole Market, Azad said she had been in touch with the constituency all these years. “My husband (Kirti Azad) who won from here in 1993 had done a lot for the constituency. In fact, all the development work that Sheila Dikshit is claiming credit for was done by my husband,” claimed Azad.

“My wife runs an NGO and has been associated with the constituency. You can ask the people here,” said Kirti Azad. The Azads are already in election mode.

Both Kirti and his wife were visiting the Balmiki Basti in Gole Market constituency on Wednesday evening.
