"I have the support of people. They know very well the development works done by Congress. I am confident of winning with a good margin, breaking all my records," Sayeed, who flew down to the mainland after filing his nomination papers at 1345 hours at Kavaratti, told reporters here on Friday evening.

Till 1996 when Congress was at the Centre, lot of development activities had taken place in the island, he said.

The island had also achieved development in the fishing and tourism sectors when Congress was at the Centre, he said. Besides, an airport was built at Agatti island and helipads were contructed in various islands that formed part of the Lakshadweep, Sayeed said.

There was a stagnation with regard to island development during the last eight years, he said adding the electricity charges, ship and helicopter fares have gone up.

Sayeed, whose birthday falls on the polling day, May 10, said he was getting good reception from the people during his campaigning in all the islands.
