Moreover, Lt-Gen Subramanyam said the proximity of Lucknow with religious cities and temple town of Lucknow were another source of inspiration for liking the City of Nawabs. He said Ayodhya, Sangam, Ganga and of course religious places in Uttaranchal. “Though, it has become a separate state, but it has evolved from the mother state of Uttar Pradesh,” added the Lt-Gen. “I am sure the city would call be back sometime,” said the Army commander in a choked voice, and added that he would be able to walk on Hazratganj lane and also the busy market of Aminabad.

Lt-Gen is a voracious reader and loves the bookstores in Lucknow. “Advani bookstall has a good collection of books for me,” he added. After having stayed in the city of Nawabs, the Army commander plans to move to the cultural capital of Maharashtra- Pune. Born in Madurai in Tamil Nadu, Lt-Gen Subramanyam had stayed in many parts of the country during his service and before joining the service in 1965 in Mumbai.

As regards the military and civilian interaction, he said the interaction was necessary as even the army men come from the same society and background.

“After the completion of service we have to go back to civil life,” he quipped. He denied that the Army looks down upon the civilians. “No nothing of the sort has come to my notice at least not in my command,” he said. About his post-retirement life, the Army commander said that he would devote most of his time to spiritualism.

About the contribution of Army Wives Welfare Association (Central Command), the Army commander expressed his satisfaction that his wife Meera Subramanyam, the president of AWWA received the Uttar Pradesh Gaurav for her philanthropic work. He said that AWWA has catered to the needs of the needy. She said they got an opportunity to serve the orphans and the widows through AWWA and that was something, which gave her utmost satisfaction.
