If you love dogs, cook for them!
Donna Twichell Roberts' has written The Good Food Cookbook for Dogs. "The idea was that if I were a dog, what would I want to eat?" she said.
Donna Twichell Roberts' new cookbook features recipes for creamy macaroni and cheese with sausage, hearty beef barley stew, and the comforting staple tuna noodle casserole.
Though the recipes will make the reader's tummy growl, Roberts is more interested in appeasing the palette of the four-legged set with "The Good Food Cookbook for Dogs," which was published in October.
"I've been cooking for my dogs for over 15 years," Roberts said.
Originally from Tennessee, Roberts, 59, said she had dogs from time to time growing up, but she has always had a dog in her life since 1976.
When Roberts' now-adult daughter Adria was 12, family friend Blake Swihart gave them Humphrey, a West Highland terrier. Shortly after Humphrey's arrival, Roberts began cooking for the dog.
"The idea was that if I were a dog, what would I want to eat?" Roberts asked, smiling.
Roberts, a freelance food writer and public relations specialist, said she loves to cook. She began cooking for dogs after being given a recipe for a homemade stew for dogs. Roberts said she used to make homemade cookie treats for her dogs and had thought about creating a dog-cookie making business. She decided against it, opting instead to continue with her freelance career.
A friend knew she would be the perfect person to compose a cookbook for pets, and she was put in touch with editors at Massachusetts-based Quarry Books.
The food isn't just table scraps, either.
