In reply to the letter of District Magistrate/Administrator the Director, Dr M D Tiwari, stated that during the execution of the ambitious plan, it would be very important to manage and monitor the information related with various ongoing works in a very effective manner.

"If spatial database is created to store the required information in computers, the Geographical Information System (GIS) software tools may be effectively used to manage and monitor the information and may also help in various analysis and decision making tasks".

He stated that in recent years GIS and Remote Sensing (RS) satellite/aerial imageries have been used for natural resources management, natural hazard management, crime analysis, emergency planning, land records management, market analysis and transport applications etc. Use of GIS for public health is also an important area. It has been effectively used to identify and monitor location of disease in relation to environmental factors. The images obtained through RS satellite become an important source of information for this purpose.

Many cities are striving for e-governance (EG) through GIS that will increase transparency and accountability and reduce complacency in the system. GIS has the potential to link data visually on the common denominator, analyse it and make predictions for the future, he says.

Maps are essential in Urban Planning and e-governance. Once the base map is digitised, all relevant information about the household, mohalla, ward and city can be fed into the map or corresponding databases for analysis and predictions.

Use of remote sensing imageries and/or aerial photogrammetry will simplify the updating of the base map and thereby greater accuracy. Integration of GIS with Global Positioning System (GPS), wireless technology, and the Internet has also introduced new and exciting applications.

He further stated that new ways of visualising the results of modelling and intelligent spatial data analysis techniques are needed to help decision-making and resource management.
