India-Russia to make multi-role transport jet

There are indications of progress on jointly developing a sixth generation compact jet.

India and Russia on Wednesday agreed to the joint production of a multi-role transport aircraft even as there were indications of progress on jointly developing a sixth generation compact jet.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov made the announcement at a joint press conference here with his Indian counterpart AK Antony after the meeting of the inter-governmental committee on military technical cooperation.

The two countries also signed an agreement for the licensed production of RD 33 engines for the MiG 29 fighters of the Indian Air Force.

Ivanov is in India ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's two-day visit to the country beginning from Thursday.
