Vinod Kumar Saxena, a 61-year-old meteorology professor, was reported missing last week after he failed to appear at a therapy appointment. Investigators later learned he had not been to his campus apartment since December 29, San Jose State Police Sgt Robert Noriega said on Tuesday.

While police would not disclose why Saxena was going to therapy, but said he had misfortune recently in his employment and family life and may be severely depressed.

Sgt Noriega said there is no indication of foul play.

Police suspect Saxena may have gone to North Carolina, where he once taught and where an ex-wife lives, or Pennsylvania, where police believe he may have been researching a book, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Saxena, who holds several degrees, including a doctorate from Agra University, is an expert in fog and cloud microphysics.
