The army chief, Gen. NC Vij said: "The army has taken on the challenge of earning laurels in international sports and for this we are training our soldiers at the Army Sports Institute in Pune.
"We aim to win gold medals for our country," he said, speaking at a function organised at the army headquarters here to felicitate Rathore, who won the silver in the double trap shooting competition.
Vij said Rathore, like other sportspersons from the army, had been given the best infrastructure in country and was aided by foreign coaches during his training.
"The army's mission Olympics was planned three years ago and we are carrying it forward with great zeal and enthusiasm," he said.
Giving details of the mission, Vij said: "We have selected games like boxing, wrestling, archery, shooting, athletics, rowing and horse riding and several soldiers are being training in Pune under the guidance of prominent sports personalities."
Rathore described his felicitation in the army chief's office as a "momentous occasion".
