Heavy mortar shelling started from across the LoC at Poonch sector, about 240 km north of Jammu. The LoC divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

A Junior Commissioned Officer died on the spot while two other soldiers were wounded, a spokesman of the Indian Army said.

The spokesman said this could be because of Pakistan's attempts to push in terrorists into India.
