Ravinderjit Kaur Shergill, the 24-year-old politician from British Columbia, who is also known as Ravinderjit Kaur Puar and Amanpreet Kaur Puar, was arrested in Seattle, Washington, June 30 for allegedly selling the drug ecstasy to a US drug enforcement agent.
Before her arrest, Shergill told the agent that both she and her father were politicians and she "cannot have any 'heat'" on her, US Special Agent Joseph Parker stated in a 17-page complaint filed in the Seattle court, which refused to grant her bail July 7.
Shergill allegedly handed over bags of ecstasy pills to Parker. "The bags contained pink tablets weighing a total of 2,215 grams, blue tablets weighing 378 grams and seven additional tablets weighing 26 grams," according to a Globe and Mail report.
Sarbjit Singh Virk, Sarbjit Singh Sandhu and Kamaljit Singh Ghag were also charged along with Shergill, with distributing ecstasy, a controlled substance in the US.
Shergill joined the provincial New Democratic Party in September 2004, and ran unsuccessfully for an NDP nomination in the recent provincial election.
Her father Kulwant Singh Puar, who operates four tow trucks under contract for Buster's Towing, is regarded as a valued supporter of Canadian Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh of the ruling Liberal Party.
"The Minister came to know him recently. He was a supporter in the 2004 campaign, and the Minister appreciated his support," Ken Polk, press aide to Dosanjh was quoted as saying by Globe and Mail.
