RAMPUR IS ‘volatile’ on the eve Governor TV Rajeswar’s visit. The local Intelligence unit today alerted the additional director general (intelligence) Deshraj Nagar and other senior officers here about the precarious situation prevailing in Rampur with Samajwadi Party workers taking out rallies and burning the Governor’s effigies in city and rural areas to protest against his Wednesday trip. Agitated SP leaders said Rajeswar would be welcomed in Rampur only after he cleared the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University Bill.

According to the intelligence report (No ZMD/misc/06 dated April 25, 2006) from Moradabad to headquarters here on Tuesday, protest rallies were taken out in Bilaspur, Swartada and Rampur. The report says that the SP has called upon its activists in rural areas to reach Rampur on Wednesday.

The report further points out that the SP has plans to disrupt the Governor’s visit by “sloganeering, hooting and creating a chaotic situation”.

It further states that SP workers and supporters of the Jauhar University will assemble at the Gandhi Samadhi on Wednesday morning wearing black badges.
According to the report, which indicates that Urban Development Minister Mohd Azam Khan is expected in Rampur, there was so far no change in the protest programme.

The report quotes Azam Khan saying that the people of Rampur were opposed to the Governor’s visit. SP district president Satnam Singh, city youth wing president Asif and women cell chief Anita Jain will lead the protest march, the report says. It adds that IG Barielly has been provided with four companies each of PAC, RAF, three additional SPs and four circle officers.

Interestingly, the protest took place a day after the Governor had summoned Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and told tell him that there would be serious repercussions of Azam Khan’s behaviour.

Meanwhile, the City Congress committee in a fax to Governor on Tuesday said that SP leaders had been trying to vitiate the atmosphere in the town. They informed the Governor about SP-organised protests against him.

On the other hand, several delegations including that of the Samajwadi Party, managing committee Jama Masjid, Hind Tahaffuz Madaris council and others have sought appointment with the Governor.
