An Irish centenarian has donated half of her presidential cheque to the Irish Aid Organisation GOAL for its work in Kolkata. Mary Nestor from Westport donated €2,500 to the organisation.
She first learnt about the work that the charity is doing in Kolkata after reading an article in a local newspaper sparking her interest in the area. She promised that if she ever reached the milestone of 100 that she would make a contribution to the charity.
Nestor presented her cheque to Ronan Scully of GOAL, last week where she said, "GOAL is doing great work out in Calcutta and I hope my small contribution can help them in some way."
Nestor, qualified as an office accountant and a former Lady Captain of Westport Golf Club, put her longevity down to her positive out-look on life. "I was always happy and looked on the positive things in life." And, showing her witty side, she added, "It must have something to so with the fact I never got married!"
Ronan Scully from GOAL said he would be travelling to Kolkata in the next few months to see that the donation gets to the exact projects that Nestor mentioned. "Mary's a great woman and I'm sure the donation will go a long way in India," he said.
