Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's trusted aide Amit Shah had been in touch with the police officials who were involved in the reported staged killing of Ishrat and three others in June 2004.
A leading lawyer Mukul Sinha, who had filed a petition seeking a probe in the controversial encounter case, held a press conference on Saturday and shared the details of call records between police officials DG Vanjara, IB officer Rajinder Kumar, NK Amin and Amit Shah before and after the encounter.
"Two conversations between Amit Shah, who was MoS (home) and accused police officer DG Vanzara at 10.57pm on June 14, 2004 and the other at 6.10am on June 15 (immediately after the encounter) suggest sufficient evidence to summon the former minister in the case," Sinha said, adding that two cops have also testified that Shah was "aware and was informed of the conspiracy to kill Ishrat and three others in a fake encounter".
According to Sinha, the CDRs, included by the CBI in its chargesheet submitted earlier this month, show that between June 1 and June 15, the main conspirators - Rajinder Kumar and IPS officers PP Pandey and Vanzara - remained in touch with each other after the first false intelligence input was created and circulated by Kumar, who had also interrogated Ishrat and others when they were in the illegal custody of the police.
"Shah was also involved in the cover-up of the encounter after the police killed four persons and therefore the CBI must probe his role in the case," Sinha said.
The CBI charge sheet included statements of policemen, who have nailed the senior cops like PP Pande and DG Vanjara and Rajinder Kumar, who were involved in securing prior custody of the deceased and subsequently killing them in a fake encounter.
