Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian militant along the heavily guarded border between the Gaza Strip and Israel, Palestinians and the military said, despite a two-and-a-half week ceasefire.
The army said the militant was approaching the fence with a weapon and grenades when he was shot by troops.
Palestinian security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the press, said the militant, 22, was in no-man's land along the fence when he was killed last evening.
The incident was another in a string of incidents in which troops have shot Palestinians approaching the Gaza-Israel border fence since the beginning of a ceasefire on November 26. The incidents, and sporadic Palestinian rocket fire at Israel, have not derailed the truce.
Also on Wednesday, in the Mediterranean Sea near Gaza's border with Egypt - an area subject to an Israeli naval blockade - an Israeli vessel opened fire at a Palestinian boat, setting it on fire, Palestinians said. Two of the men on board were wounded, according to Palestinian emergency services. Their identity was not immediately known.
The army said an Israeli patrol boat identified a suspicious vessel and opened fire.
