Condemning the incident, they have termed it as an attempt to disturb social harmony and have urged the people to maintain peace and not to play into the hands of trouble-makers.

AU Proctor Prof Jata Shankar said that Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was a great Indian, who endeavoured to make India a great Nation and devoted his entire life to this cause.

"I strongly condemn the vandalism and would like the people of Allahabad, who have always frustrated the designs of the trouble-makers, to once again be calm and maintain the harmony for which Allahabad is known all over the country," he said.

Prof Jata Shankar said that no one has the right to insult a great patriot like Dr Ambedkar irrespective of any ideological differences.

International Cricket commentator and a Professor of Economics, Dr Amrendra Singh said that it was an act of some perverted minds.

"A man who worked to make our country better in every sense and gave it a constitution that has stood the test of time deserves the respect and gratitude of all of us.

We need to understand the designs of some anti-social elements who have attempted to create trouble in our city by damaging the statue and defeat their purpose by ensuring peace in our city."

Lending his voice to the appeal of peace, AU Botany department's Prof DN Shukla said that no one has the right to insult our great leader and that it is our duty to respect people who have contributed so much to the development of our nation.

"We all should condemn the incident and face the challenge posed to us by maintaining peace," he said.

AU students too have expressed concern over the incident.

"I was shocked by the incident but also proud that we managed to ensure peace not only in the city but also on the campus.

Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was a great Indian leader admired throughout the country and no one has the right to insult him by damaging his statue," said Vijay Singh, a BA-II student of AU.

AU students led by student leader Nirbhay Singh Patel and Lala Ram Saroj held a meeting and expressed anger over the desecration of the statue and demanded immediate action against the guilty.

A number of student organisations including the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) and All India Students Association (AISA) too held separate meetings condemning the act of vandalism and demanded immediate arrest of the persons responsible for the act.

They also appealed to the people to maintain peace.
