Party leader Muzaffar Baig said the date for the oath-taking would be decided after Mehbooba’s meeting with Vohra.

“The senior leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) decided to elect Mehbooba Mufti as the legislature party leader. Mufti Mohammad had a detailed discussion with the Prime Minister before the alliance was stitched. After his death, Mehbooba ji had to rebuild the relationship... Our agenda of alliance is comprehensive and there is nothing to add or delete from it,” Baig said.

Mehbooba Mufti was on Thursday elected as the party’s chief ministerial nominee at the legislature party meet. Following the death of her father, chief minister Mufti Mohammad Syeed, on January 7, Jammu and Kashmir has been under Governor’s rule.

Governor NN Vohra called for separate meetings with the PDP chief and BJP state president Sat Sharma to determine the next government.

Political opponents however criticised the party for the long delay in deciding on the PDP-BJP alliance, with Congress leader Rajeev Shukla saying Mehbooba owed an explanation to people of the state.

“It is a good thing that a government is being formed. But what was the need to take two-and-a-half months time for it? After the demise of Mufti sahab, we were hoping that a government would be formed soon. They should focus on giving a stable government instead of these stand-offs,” Shukla said.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah also similarly attacked the PDP chief.

“She kept us under the impression that she would ask for something from the Centre, like funds, or power projects, issue of AFSPA etc,” he said, stating Mehbooba needed to explain herself.

After meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday, Mehbooba had said that she would take a final decision regarding the government formation and PDP-BJP alliance after consulting with her party MLAs in the legislature meeting.
