A Taser gun uses electric shocks to subdue a target. Its effect is called ‘neuromuscular incapacitation’, which means it interrupts the brain’s ability to control the muscles.

Top officials of the J&K police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) held a meeting in Srinagar last week, where the decision to procure these guns were taken.

Talking to HT, a senior police official requesting anonymity said: “Due to rise of agitations the police needs technology that could enable them to control the mob with minimum damage to life.”

The police and paramilitary forces have come into the radar of human rights organisations when pro-freedom stone-pelting youth have become victims of their tear gas shells or bullets.
