Padhi has been suspended as per service rules, which make it mandatory for an officer to be placed under suspension in case he is in police custody for more than 48 hours, a senior Home Ministry official said on Thursday.

The senior BSF official, who had joined the force in 1972, was arrested last week in connection with the sex racket.

The BSF is also withholding a police medal for which Padhi had been selected as part of the awards given on the Republic Day this year. The medal has been put on hold till the court verdict comes out.

Accused of raping a minor girl, Padhi was identified by her on June 11, according to CBI sources.

The Test Identification Parade of Padhi was conducted in the Central Jail in Srinagar where he is now in judicial custody.

Nine people, including Sabeena, the alleged kingpin of the racket, have been arrested so far in connection with the scandal that triggered widespread protests in the Kashmir valley last month.
