Police recovered a handmade pistol and half a dozen cartridges from his person while his ally managed to escape. SP Azamgarh announced Rs 2,500 award for the police team that eliminated the criminal.
Thursday’s encounter ensued at Kamharia Ghat, about 50 kilometres away from the district headquarters.
When the miscreant fired at police party. According to reports, inspector Belghat got a tip-off that some criminals had moved on motorcycles from Jiyanpur town of Azamgarh district to Gorakhpur. Along with a team of policemen, the inspector set out checking vehicles at Kamharia Ghat.
Sources said after passing a night in the government primary school in Shankerpur, the criminals were moving towards Gorakhpur and inspector of Jiyanpur police station BP Yadav began chasing them. He passed a message to in charge of the other police station and CO Sagdi of Azamgarh district directed police personnel to maintain strict vigil on all vehicular movement. Meanwhile, Belghat SO spotted a motorcycle coming from the other side and stopped it, but the miscreants took a U-turn and took shelter in a hut.
The other miscreants manage to flee. On receiving information of the encounter, SP Azamgarh Navin Arora rushed to the spot and identified the dreaded criminal as Jagdhar Pasi.
