Talking to newsmen here on Monday, senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Surendra Mohan Agarwal targeted Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal by raising the issue of his resignation from the post of Mayor in 1989.

Agarwal said that Jaiswal had resigned from the post of Mayor alleging non-cooperation in carrying out development activities in the city from the then non-Congress state government. The previous Congress Mayor Anil Sharma too had made similar grievances throughout his tenure, he added.

“Now, when once again the SP is going to form the next government in the state after the Vidhan Sabha election, what is the use of Congress candidate contesting the mayoral seat,” asked Agarwal. He also asked Jaiswal to withdraw Congress candidate Badri Narain Tewari from the contest and support SP candidate Neeraj Chaturvedi. Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav’s strained relationship with Jaiswal is no secret. The present power crisis in the city is being attributed to this strained relationship.

Replying to a query, Agarwal said that it was late Haji Mushtaq Solanki, the lone representative of the SP in the Vidhan Sabha from Arya Nagar constituency in Kanpur city, who had developed his constituency.

District general secretary of the party Jitendra Bahadur Singh added that despite of not being in power Surendra Mohan Agarwal has done a lot for the Generalganj Vidhan Sabha constituency.

Agarwal had lost the last Vidhan Sabha election from the constituency to BJP candidate Salil Bishnoi.

The SP leader has made his intentions clear of once again contesting from the constituency by carrying out several development activities in the area.
